Bill Baierl Distinguished Alumni Service Award
The Bill Baierl Distinguished Alumni Award was established to recognize the volunteer service of an alumnus to both the University and his/her community.
Pitt Alumni Association President Gary Brownlee, Bruce Mountjoy (CGS ’91), Tracy Floyd (NURS ’91), Darryl Floyd (A&S ’89, MED ’94G), Bill Baierl Distinguished Alumni Service Award Winner John P. Gismondi (A&S ’75, LAW ’78), Gordon Louderback (ENGR ’13), and Executive Director, Pitt Alumni Association Jeff Gleim.
Martha H. Munsch (A&S ’70)
Martha H. Munch has led a life of service to both Pitt and her community. Her service as the Pitt Alumni Association Board president led to her first of two terms as a Pitt trustee. She has served on the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee, the Board of Visitors at the School of Law and the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, and as an advisor to the Office of Institutional Advancement.
Munsch has also provided substantial financial support to Pitt—establishing the Martha Hartle Munsch Endowed Women’s Basketball Scholarship, endowing the Martha Hartle Munsch Head Women’s Basketball Coach’s Office fund, and generously contributing to the Mark A. Nordenberg Scholarship Fund.
She has been an equally dedicated community volunteer—serving on the boards of the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, La Roche College, and Dapper Dan Charities. She has also served on numerous other local organizations including Epilepsy Foundation and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.
Munsch, who is now retired, was one of only three women attorneys at Reed Smith when she joined the law firm in the early 1970’s. In 1976, she joined the full-time faculty of Pitt’s School of Law, where she was the first (and only) woman in a full time tenure-track faculty position at that time. She later returned to Reed Smith, where she went on to become the first woman elected to partnership in their Pittsburgh office. She was a trial lawyer who litigated hundreds of cases at both the trial and appellate levels in federal and state courts and administrative agencies.
Munsch earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at Pitt and graduated from the Yale Law School.
